Japanese Garden at Fanhams Hall

With a little bit of artistic licence and my impressionistic loose approach this is Fanhams Hall Gardens which is very close to me and where I spent a lovely afternoon with friends.

Autumn on Hot Press Watercolour Paper

Autumn is in the air and I have been doing lots of little autumnal studies on Fabriano Artistico Hot Press watercolour paper.  A smooth surface is not normally what I look for in my paper.  I like to have roughness for texture.  So I was pleasantly surprised when I found I ended up liking the smoother feel of the paper.  It took a little while to get used to after having used rough or not for so long.

I found I needed to use a creamier pigment application than normal because the lack of friction from texture allowed the pigment to spread further when dropped into water (wet in wet).

My rosehip painting shows how I was able to layer and create some lovely flowy blends especially where the rosehips overlap.  You can actually see the different layers of colour I used: yellow, orange, red.

My second attempt on FA HP paper just before I painted the Rosehips. I was still getting used to the smoothness here.

I hope you too are enjoying the delights and colours that autumn brings.

Thanks for looking.

Pears are the most wonderfully behaved subjects to paint.
Unlike people they never move a muscle.

A Day in London seen through Pen and Watercolour Sketches

Last Saturday was a day for culture and sightseeing in London.  First stop, The Courtauld Gallery and the “Becoming Picasso Paris 1901” Exhibition.   It was great to see some of Picasso’s earlier work which showed a tiny fraction of his development in finding who he was as an artist.

After grabbing a quick lunch, a walk towards the River Thames and Waterloo Bridge gave a great view of The Shard building.  On towards South Bank to take in the sights and smells of the food market on a Saturday afternoon.

Back over the River via Charing Cross Bridge and a stroll towards the National Gallery, Trafalgar Square.

My eye was drawn to the performers in the Square. One in particular as I loved the look of his outfit and thought it would be fun to sketch.

A short walk along The Mall to the Mall Galleries for a quick look at the Illustrators Exhibition.
The final and most important stop before going home. Afternoon Tea at Caffe Concerto, Regent Street. A piece of delicious Selva Cake is a must if I am ever in the area.

Urban Sketchers - La Sagrada, Barcelona

This new phase of mine is heavily influenced by Urban Sketchers. I have always wanted to tackle architecture and landscapes without the formality of a finished painting.

A Wood Pigeon in Watercolour

A sunny afternoon and some wood pigeons in my garden gave me the inspiration to relax and be myself within my sketchbook.  The wood pigeons were doing what they do best and that is “being themselves”.  That helped me to remember to keep things simple and flowing.

Iris Flowers in Watercolour

A painting that evolved from looking at iris flowers in a vase. I liked the strong silhouette shapes that the spikey leaves and stems created. The negative shapes just seemed to happen naturally.
