Fluidity, Freedom and Flow with Trees in Watercolour

After all these years of working with watercolour I still get excited by its fluidity, freedom and flow especially when everything comes together ‘alla prima’.

Trees are perhaps the subjects that I love to paint the most.  Their abstract shapes allow me to freely build up puddles of water and colour that eventually develop into something that has the illusionary characteristics of a tree.

Landscape Explorations with Watercolour

“Your mind is for having ideas, not holding them.”
~ David Allen

Life has been a bit busy recently that I have not had much time to paint anything very seriously.  Of course during these busy times I still paint.  I snatch odd moments to develop and plan future possible ideas.

An exercise I set myself was to explore how grass shapes behave with watercolour.

Geranium Trio in Watercolour – A New Painting

“I perhaps owe having become a painter to flowers.”
~  Claude Monet 1840-1926

“It is looking at things for a long time that ripens you and gives you a deeper meaning.”
~  Vincent Van Gogh 1853-1890

Geranium Trio  SOLD
© Laura Moore

Geranium Trio was created using no direct reference.  Impressionism is just that: an impression of reality. Monet and Van Gogh both studied their subjects over and over again so that they could create believable, imaginative, unique and impressionistic pieces.

Loosening Up with Orchids in Watercolour, Ink & Crayon

As a loosening up exercise today I thought I would paint an orchid from life.  This sketch was painted “a la prima” with no prior planning.

This sketch is not an exact observational piece as realism does not always interest my muse.  I find working from life develops original ideas and compositions.  I was attracted by the crescent shape the orchid petals created.
